The B.A. degree in Writing seeks English students with a keen interest in both writing and literature. The major allows students to explore their interests in reading across a wide variety of genres and to apply that interest to the production of original writing. Through this process, students are prepared for an array of writing careers in education, media, and the arts.
The writing curriculum will enable students to focus and expand their writer’s craft in a variety of ways. Students will collaborate with their instructors and peers in studio-like, workshop-type classes to improve their ability to recognize excellent writing, to understand theories of writing production and the various ways the written word can be shaped for different purposes and audiences. They then will engage in the processes of developing their own writing abilities, analyzing their own and their peers’ writing, and revising their writing into well-executed, publishable documents. Students completing the Writing Major will also gain extensive practice with writing technologies commonly used by professional and practicing writers in and out of the workplace.
Students in the B.A. program will be able to choose from a range of offerings according to their interests and talents. The degree consists of a selection of writing courses balanced with complementary courses in literature, communication and television arts. This interdisciplinary approach will provide an exciting opportunity for those dedicated to following the writing path.
