Beyond the Classroom

Career Development Center
Careers in English (PDF), a handout prepared by the Career Development Center, is designed to help English majors define career goals, learn about job placement, and navigate toward a successful post-college career.

The CDC also offers countless employment resources, such as resume and cover letter writing workshops, job and internship listings, and research material.

Internships
Completing an internship as an undergraduate will enrich you personally, academically, and professionally. Internships may be taken for academic credit or may come with pay.

Because Buffalo State is located in New York State's second-largest city, students have access to all the city offers. Some students intern with local literary organizations and publishers.

Periodicals
For students interested in writing, editing, and arts publication, the English Department produces two magazines, Elm Leaves, founded in 1948, and The Writer's Compass, a new literary magazine supported by the Writing Center.

Practicums
English education majors work in area schools.

Project FLIGHT
Project FLIGHT is a not-for-profit organization devoted to promoting literacy in children and caregivers, through school and family literacy initiatives. It works collaboratively with practitioners, schools, community organizations and businesses locally, statewide, nationally, and internationally to achieve its objectives.

Urban Education Network
The Urban Education Network is a group of Buffalo State faculty and pre-service teachers who are interested in urban education. The group often hosts events and discussions. Visit their site for more resources.
