EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY PROGRAM

EOP ACADEMIC RESOURCE CENTER

Dear Faculty/Staff Colleague,

We are pleased to announce that the EOP Academic Resource Center (ARC) has been accredited by the College Reading and Learning Association's (CRLA) International Tutor Program Certification (ITPC).  We have been accredited in all three possible levels (Regular, Advanced, and Master Level) of Academic Mentoring. Therefore, we are now able to issue ITPC certificates to our tutors upon completion of trainings in each level.  We strongly believe in creating a professional and friendly environment for students utilizing our services, as well as for assisting in professional growth and development of our tutorial staff.

The Academic Mentor Training Table of Contents shows the topics we cover during our training sessions. By the time the Academic Mentors complete Master level Academic Mentoring, they have developed many skills including cultural awareness and inter-cultural communications skills, supervisory skills, group management skills (group interaction and dynamics), etc. These are skills that we believe will give an edge to our Academic Mentors planning to continue their education in graduate school or to enter the job market.

Each Academic Mentor will need 25 hours of actual tutoring and 10 hours of training to acquire certification in each level, bringing the total to 75 hours of tutorial plus 30 hours of training for all three levels of certification. Our Academic Mentors will now be able to compete for Outstanding Tutor Award sponsored by CRLA's International Tutor Certification Program.

In addition to many resources we have towards the 30 hours of training, we are still in need of volunteers to be "guest speakers/trainers" at our various training sessions.  Please let me know if you are willing to assist us, and the topics you would like to cover based on Academic Mentor Training Table of Contents, particularly those from sections two, three, and four. It would also be helpful if you know of a valuable resource (audio, video, Internet, printed materials, etc.) that you could recommend to us for training purposes. I will get back to you with additional information and details once you indicate your willingness to volunteer and/or you have resources for us. Thank you for your continued support and assistance in strengthening our Academic Mentoring (Tutoring) Program!

Sincerely,
