Dawn of New Horizons

7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. | Whitworth Ferguson Planetarium, Science Building | Permalink

Dawn is a mission to asteroid Vesta and minor planet Ceres, launched on September 27, 2007. NASA is studying these worlds to determine the roles that size and water play during the formation of planets. As two or the largest protoplanets, Vesta and Ceres may both contain vital clues to determining how a solid planet such as Earth developed billions of years ago. New Horizons left Earth on January 19, 2006 for Pluto. The probe is due to arrive in 2015 to study the solar system’s binary planetary system of Pluto and Charon. In February 2007, New Horizons flew past Jupiter collecting another set of research data regarding our largest planet.
