Buffalo Science Teachers Network
Need: To support improved science education in the Buffalo Public Schools, an urban, high-need district that serves about 43,000 students.
The purpose of BSTN teacher preparation and professional development project is to prepare and support educators to help all students achieve high standards of learning and development in middle and high school science. Funding supports beginning science teachers in the middle grades during their first three years of teaching. Teachers receive funds for continued graduate education, classrooms materials, attending professional conferences, and classroom materials.
Great Performers Series at Rockwell Hall (http://www.buffalostate.edu/pac/season/gp0708.asp)
Need: Sponsorship support for the 2007-2008 performance calendar
Bridging the Health Insurance Gap
Need: To address critical health care needs of students.
During the 2007-2008 academic year, Weigel Health Center is seeking outside support to help Buffalo State students who cannot afford to pay for Buffalo State College's health insurance, and who also do not qualify for Medicaid or other safety net programs. In 2005-2006, the program helped 22 students cover critical health care costs that they would have otherwise been unable to cover either due to insufficient health care coverage or no health insurance coverage at all.
Community Service Day
Need: Community beautification.
Buffalo State College's Community Service Day involves a diverse group of 275 students, faculty, and staff, not to mention a number of neighborhood community partners, in a community project designed to beautify a particular neighborhood through the planting of a community park/garden.
Funding Required: $500-$2,000 for trees, supplies, equipment, and refreshments.
Foster Youth
Need: Personal development of area foster youth and foster families.
Foster Youth Outdoor Experiences is a creative program that offers 20 foster youth the opportunity to experience nature (many of them have not) using the ropes course to help improve trust, communication, and problem solving in foster homes. The program includes adventure games, a hiking trek, whitewater rafting, therapeutic horse riding, and a picnic/awards show.
Foster Youth Computer Camp provides area foster teens with opportunities to improve their computer skills in a fun and interesting computer camp environment. Buffalo State students from the Social Work Department will be involved with these youth, thus affording social workers in training a unique opportunity to engage in a real-world application of what they are learning in the classroom.
Foster Family Ropes Course is a creative program that uses the ropes course to help improve trust, communication, and problem solving in foster homes. The program has been designed to help families learn how to work and talk with one another using different elements and activities to open up and engage participants in new and positive ways. The program is a two-day program beginning in the summer, and will be implemented three times with two sets of foster families.
Foster Youth Obesity Project is an innovative program that addresses the problem of obesity in foster teens through instruction in physical activity, healthy eating, and weight management. The objective is to eliminate obesity as yet another obstacle in the lives of foster youth.
Health Care Taxi Fund
Need: Student emergency health care.
Many students struggle to put themselves through school. When a medical situation arises that does not require an ambulance, it is difficult for some students to get to and from the hospital because they may not be able to drive themselves or have anyone else drive them. The result is that Weigel Health Center staff members use their own personal funds to cover transportation costs to and from the hospital.
Nutrition Education and Counseling Center
Need: To promote health, reduce obesity and disease prevention.
The Dietetics and Nutrition Department seeks to formalize its education, research, and community service activity through the establishment of a Nutrition Education and Counseling Center. The Buffalo State Nutrition Education and Counseling Center (NECC) will be dedicated to health promotion and disease prevention through nutrition counseling, education, research, and community outreach.
Study Abroad Scholarship Support
Need: Scholarship support for deserving students
Buffalo State College offers a variety of eight study abroad programs for its students. However, in order for study abroad opportunities to become a reality for many of our students, scholarship funds are needed to cover extra costs for students who may not be able to participate in the program due to financial constraints. Internationalization on campus is becoming an increasingly important component for our students' academic experience.
Support for Post-Partum Depression (PPD)
Need: To identify access to PPD care needs for women throughout Western New York
The projects seeks to identify access to PPD care providers for women residing in Western New York. The findings will be used to improve access to PPD care. The project will expand a recently completed pilot study needs assessment conducted primarily in Buffalo, NY to assess access to PPD care.
Undergraduate Research Program
Need: To provide support to enhance academic opportunities for undergraduate students to conduct research, scholarship, and creative activities, and to present their results at national and international professional conferences, performances, and exhibits.
An Office of Undergraduate Research was established in 2003 as part of the College's efforts to expand and institutionalize undergraduate research. Programs coordinated by this office include an annual student research symposium, a summer research fellowship program, small grants program to support academic year research, travel support for students presenting/performing at professional meetings, and faculty development opportunities related to undergraduate research.
Funding Required:
Summer Fellowship: $4,000 per student for 2 months full-time research ($500 for project travel/materials; $2,500 student stipend; $1,000 faculty member stipend)
Undergraduate Travel Awards: $400 for regional/national meetings; $600 for international travel
Urban Teacher Academy
Need: To provide educational courses and opportunities for Buffalo State teachers in training who are committed to working in high-need urban districts.
Schools throughout Western New York are working hard to address the needs of underprivileged students. However, urban teacher preparation continues to fall short. Well-prepared individuals, sensitized to the needs of students in urban districts, are needed to be able to address the unique needs of students matriculating in urban school districts throughout Western New York. This is an initiative of Buffalo State Colleges highly regarded Center for Excellence in Urban and Rural Education.
