Professor Mix teaches
Fundamental and Advanced Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Urban Geography, Transportation Geography, Community Planning, and Computing/Data Analysis courses at Buffalo State College.
Dr. Mix’s recent research interests are many.
She has been evaluating geocoding data models; investigating methods to improve their accuracy and to document resultant spatial data quality. Dr. Mix works with administrative databases as well as location data from surveys . With respect to survey based location data, she has also investigated spatial perception issues that impact reporting of location by respondents and recording of location by interviewers.
Dr. Mix has also conducted empirical research on neighborhood health and transition as well as downtown revitalization. She has been developing an urban GIS application to monitor neighborhood change. The application is intended to be used as a Community Management System to support decision making at the neighborhood level. She has integrated data from many disparate sources that include temporal information on real estate transactions, foreclosures, bankruptcies, housing code violations, building permits and crime. In addition, Dr. Mix has developed several mapping indocators that allow users to determine how neighborhoods are changing and what type of changes are occuring.
Methods and practices of teaching with GIS, especially in concert with other technologies, at the K-12 and undergraduate levels is a third focus area for Dr. Mix's research.
