PROGRAMS

About the Program

The Study of Understanding Community, Diversity and Peace as an academic minor area of study  integrates concepts from a number and variety of academic disciplines as a means of providing students with an expansive yet focused view of the world, its resources, contexts, and people, and their relationship to functions of community, diversity and peace. Universal human rights through nonviolence are synonymous with the ultimate goals of a caring community and society. To help others will surely improve the world but first we must develop a more thorough understanding of community, diversity, and the rudiments of peace. The multidisciplinary framework of this academic minor will examine the interconnectedness of all peoples and the environment and how they share basic needs and concerns.

The intent of this program of study is to provide students with the opportunity to examine human responsibility to and for the community-local, national, and international-which is essential in fostering and sustaining peaceful relations, justice, and reconciliation. The fundamental purpose of required formal course work and related experience is to enable students to construct a base of knowledge associated with concepts and practices of community, diversity and peace from a broad and varied range of human perspectives and experiences. Finally, given the immense value of community involvement and contribution, a field service experience is required in this program of study.
