Individualized Option

Through advisement and within certain guidelines, this options allows students to design their own programs by selecting graduate courses from any department at the college or from other accredited institutions.

Admission Requirements

  • Completion of a Graduate Admission Application packet (pdf). Current Buffalo State graduate students wishing to change majors, must complete a Change of Major Application (pdf). Hardcopy applications are available at the Graduate School Office.
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 (4.0) scale.
  • Statement of Intent including the following:
    • Your professional or educational objectives to be obtained through a multidisciplinary approach to the master's degree.
    • A brief explanation of the reasons you are interested in this nontraditional study format.
    • A detailed outline of the proposed plan of study, including specific courses with course numbers and titles. Your plan of study must comply with the Program and College Regulations.
    • The statement of intent will be evaluated as a writing sample, indicative of academic success at the graduate level. Please type and proofread it prior to submission.
  • Submit a Principal Adviser (PA) Consent Form (pdf). Prior to admission, applicants must identify a principal adviser from the graduate faculty and obtain the faculty member's consent to serve as the principal adviser. Assistance in selecting faculty to contact is available during the student's interview, if necessary, a hardcopy PA Consent Form is available, at the Graduate School Office.
  • An interview with the admissions coordinator. Please contact Kimberly J. Jackson at (716) 878-5601 for an appointment once you have written your full application packet.
