GREAT LAKES CENTER

FACILITIES

The Sample Sorting Lab is where samples are brought in for processing and storage.  It has two refrigerators to hold samples at cold temperatures, and a deep-chest freezer capable of holding cores up to six feet long.  Two Environmental Chambers can closely control experimental conditions. These chambers have been retrofitted to control oxygen levels, pH, and salinity in addition to temperature and light duration.  Other facilities include lab benches and a stainless steel sink for washing and sorting samples.

The Change Room holds the safety clothing such as life preservers, cold suits, and rain gear, used by researchers and students. It also holds the dive equipment used by the Center personnel who have been certified for diving. A shower, wash basin, and lavatory are also available.

The Maintenance Shop is a multi-purpose room where equipment for the boats is stored and where various shop tools such as saws, a drill press, welder, and compressor are used for maintenance and repair of the Center’s fleet.  Hazardous chemicals and flammable material used in the facility are stored in chemical safes, and a shower and eye bath are also available.
