A SPOT digital camera, that takes excellent still images, can also be mounted to either microscope. Images from this system can be readily uploaded to any internet location over a T-1 server or they may be printed out on our Sony UP-D2500 digital printer, which results in a 3x5 near-photo print quality image, suitable for any journal submission.
Analytical equipment includes a PARR 1356 isoperibol bomb calorimeterthat provides accurate heat of combustion values for both solids and liquids, and a Turner Designs 10-AU-005 fluorometer that can be used in the field or lab to give accurate chlorophyll and pheophytin measurements. A Metrohm 716 DMS Titrino is equipped to do over 90 different titrations. A Neslab RTE-111 water bath is an excellent way to keep experimental containers and glassware at specific temperatures or to pump water of a specific temperature from one container to another. We also have a smaller controlled environmental chamber located in this lab for holding experiments at specific temperatures and light levels. A Lamotte SMART colorimeter is a compact, easy to use unit that can be used in the field or lab to obtain accurate measurements of various metals and parameters found in water samples. Some popular tests that can be done include copper, iron, zinc, aluminum, pH, dissolved oxygen, cyanide, and many others. These tests generally take less than 5 minutes each. Available equipment for microbiological work include a Percival Scientific incubator, Market Forge Autoclave, and Thermal Line Culture incubator.
The lab also serves as an excellent all-around laboratory with the usual features including a Mettler Balance with 0.01 μgram precision, Vac Torr vacuum pump portable O2 and pH meters, a large fume hood, distilled-deionized water supply, gas and water outlets, a large selection of glassware, equipment sterilizer, refrigerator and freezer space, and plenty of working space for experiments.
