Designed to acquaint students majoring in the secondary area of exceptional education with the teaching methods and materials used in secondary social studies education. Students participate in laboratory sessions with social studies materials and construct tests and evaluative instruments.

SSE 605
Topics for Inservice Education
Prerequisite: Provisional certification.
A topical seminar to meet inservice needs. Topics may be selected from any area of instructional and curricular concerns appropriate for the secondary school. Mode of presentation includes lectures, discussions, microteaching, and projects according to the topics selected. One to six credits are arranged, commensurate with the nature of the topic and the extensiveness of study. Classification: graduate credit for any secondary education program.
SSE 610
The Study of Peace and War in the Secondary School
A number of possible approaches for achieving peace have been proposed by scholars in recent years, and a significant number of materials for presenting these approaches and the more traditional ones have been published. The course introduces the student to these issues and materials and offers some strategies for teaching them and some criteria for judging them. The teaching of a unit on peace at a site chosen by the student or instructor in required.

Social Studies Laboratory
Prerequisite: SSE 513 recommended.
This course provides the social studies teacher the opportunity to interact with fellow professionals in developing skills to design, implement, and evaluate curriculum materials as required by newer approaches to the social studies. Classification: elective for graduate social studies education students.

Experiences in Simulation and Role Playing for the Social Studies Teacher
This course is designed to provide the secondary social studies teacher opportunities for in-depth investigation of simulation and role-playing techniques. Emphasis is placed on creating models of social situations and translating them into dynamic simulation and role-playing episodes. To be taken after or concurrently with SSE 513.

Planning for Educational Change
Perspectives on planned educational change: models of change, innovations, adapters, change agent roles, change strategies and techniques, information networks. The student devises a plan for introducing an innovation into an educational setting.

Research in Methods and Techniques in Secondary Social Studies
Prerequisite: SSE 513 and social studies elective.
An introduction to quantitative and qualitative research in the social studies, the development of research problems, data collection in the social studies, and the format of a research paper.
SSE 690
Master's Project
Research or investigation of a particular problem in planned and carried out under the guidance of a graduate faculty member. Written approval by the faculty advisor and the chair of the department is required before registration is permitted. The final project report must be submitted according to department directions.
SSE 795
Thesis
An individual investigation of an original problem, submitted in acceptable form according to Graduate Studies and Research Office directions.
