Masters of Science (MS) in Social Studies Education
The graduate program leading to the master of science in education degree with a major in social studies helps candidates become educational leaders and innovative change agents as they acquire permanent teaching certification.
Admissions Requirements
Each applicant must meet the admissions requirements set by the Graduate Studies and Research Office and the following:
1. A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75. An applicant with a minimum undergraduate cumulative GPA of 2.5 may be granted conditional admission to the program.
2. Thirty-six credits in history and/or the social studies.
3. Eligibility for a certificate of qualification (CQ) or New York State provisional certification for teaching (or approved equivalent).
Each student is assigned an advisor, and it is imperative that students consult regularly with their advisors. All students must have their programs of study approved by their advisors and the department chair.
Program Requirements
At the completion of 12 credits of coursework in the prescribed program, the student must have achieved a minimum GPA of 3.0.
At least 15 credits overall must be completed in 600- or 700-level courses.

History and/or the Social Sciences (15 cr)
This coursework is to be selected with the advisor's approval, and a minimum of nine credits must be concentrated in a single discipline.
