Master of Arts Degree (MA) in History
Admission Requirements
1. A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 and a minimum GPA of 3.0 in history.
2. Thirty credits in history
*If applicant does not meet these requirements, the History and Social Studies Education Department may grant conditional admission to the program. Such additional work or waiver of general prerequisites shall be set forth by the Instruction Committee at the time of acceptance for admission.
The student, with the approval of the department chair or the Instruction Committee selects, from among the department members, an advisor who specializes in the student's principle areas of interest.
Program Requirements
I. Language
Demonstrated competence in a foreign language may be necessary. If applicable, competency examinations will be arranged by the thesis advisor and approved by the department chair.
II. Required Courses (18 cr)
Courses to be chosen under advisement in American, European, or Non-Western history. Six credits may be taken in related disciplines, such as political science, geography, and/or English, with the approval of the student's advisor and the department chair.
III. Seminars (6 cr)

IV. Thesis (6 cr)
The student, in consultation with his or her academic adviser and second reader, prepares and submits a written thesis. Once approved the student must successfully provide an oral defense of the thesis.
