Student Awards and Scholarships
Departmental Awards
(Student and Faculty Nominated)
The Department of History and Social Studies Education grants the following awards to outstanding students in both History and Social Studies Education as appropriate. These awards are distributed annually to students that nominate themselves or are nominated by a faculty member in accordance with the specific requirements associated with each award. Applications for these awards may be obtained from the office of the Department of History and Social Studies Education.
Norman F. Weaver Award for Excellence in Historical Research and Writing
This award goes to a student who has demonstrated excellence in historical research and writing.
Eric Brunger Award of Merit
This award goes to a student who has written an outstanding paper in the area of American History or American historical geography.
Departmental Scholarships

The Department of History and Social Studies Education grants the following awards to outstanding students in both History and Social Studies Education.
Applications for awards may be obtained from the office of the Department of History and Social Studies Education.
Anthony Sokolowski Scholarship Award
This award goes to an outstanding major who is of Polish descent.
E. O. Smith, Jr. Endowed Scholarship
This award goes to an outstanding graduate or undergraduate history major that has demonstrated achievement in British and Irish history, Asian history, European history, Church history, or Buffalo/Niagara regional history.
Bernard and Nancy Belfer Scholarship Fund
This award shall be given to history majors based on financial need and academic achievement.
The Donald D. and Barbara J. Leopard Memorial Scholarship Fund
This award shall be given to an undergraduate or graduate history major that displays intellectual curiosity in Modern European, African, or Military History. Special consideration shall be given to participation in Phi Alpha Theta or the History Honor Society.
The Thomas F. Higgins Scholarship Award
This scholarship is awarded to qualified seniors in History or Criminal Justice. Student must possess a 3.5 grade point average. This scholarship alternates yearly between departments.

The Department of History and Social Studies Education grants the following awards to outstanding students in both History and Social Studies Education as appropriate. These awards are distributed annually to students nominated by department faculty on the basis of their classroom involvement and academic achievement.
David Vernon Bullough Memorial Award in History
This award goes to an outstanding senior history major.
Harold F. Peterson Award
This award is made to an outstanding history or social studies education major.
Thomas G. Powell History Award
This award goes to an outstanding senior history major.
Kathleen Mallea Award for Excellence in Social Studies Education
This award will be made to an outstanding senior social studies education major.
G. Allen McFarren Award for Excellence in Student Teaching
This award goes to a student who has demonstrated excellence as a student teacher.
Dr. Manny T. Koginos U.S. History Student Award
This award shall be given to an American History major for meritorious academic achievement.
Scholarly Athlete Award
This award is made to an outstanding history or social studies education major that is an active participant in a Buffalo State College athletic program.
