The hospitality industry is one of the largest in the world, generating more than $452 billion in annual revenues and employing more than 11 million people in the United States alone. Some estimates suggest that the hospitality industry is the largest in the world, with revenue and employment figures in excess of $3 trillion and 120 million people.

The International Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education (CHRIE) divides the hospitality and tourism industry into five major service segments: food, lodging, recreation, travel, and convention/meeting. Numerous employment opportunities are available to hospitality and tourism graduates. Potential areas include:

The Buffalo State Hospitality and Tourism Department has an excellent job-placement rate for graduating seniors. Through their academic courses and internships, students are encouraged to select career paths based on individual skills and interests. The capstone course, HTR 485: Seminar in Hospitality, provides additional career assistance. Recent placement sites include:
