The new dining area in the Student Union is an exciting, contemporary space for eating, relaxing, and connecting. "When I was a student majoring in interior design," said Tom Zilka, '96, "I could see that the dining area at Buff State needed improvement in design and function."

Zilka is a project manager with BHNT, the architectural firm that designed the new on-campus dining facilities. BHNT is also managing the two-phase construction process. The second phase-renovating the dining facilities for resident students who participate in the college's meal plans-will be completed by fall 2008.

The first phase, which opened this semester, used a "marché" design (from the French, meaning market). "This design style seeks to create the look and feel of an open market," explained Zilka. It is intended to promote a sense of community, encourage students to stay on campus for meals, and support a college atmosphere.

"I really like it," said Joshua DesJardins, a sophomore planning to major in business. "It's funky."

"Modern," agreed sophomore Amber Noreck. "I like the lighting, and the purple tiles on the wall."

"The windows, too," said DesJardins. "And the pizza is delish." [more…]
