Distinguished Alumni Honored

Buffalo State is pleased to award the 2007 Distinguished Alumnus Award to Richard C. Auerbach, David Lazerson, and Stan Szymanski.

Richard C. Auerbach, ’52, ’55

Richard C. Auerbach, a member of the Alpha Honor Society, served as an administrator for the Sweet Home Central School District and curriculum coordinator in the Amherst Central District. After earning his doctorate, Auerbach taught at Daemen and Buffalo State colleges. He also served in the United States Naval Reserve.

Auerbach has worked tirelessly on behalf of the college in many roles including co-chair of the Alumni Committee for the Burchfield-Penney Art Center capital campaign. He and his wife, Rita Argen Auerbach, ’54, ’74, a distinguished alumna, have earned the title “Lifetime Donors,” a designation reserved for the college’s most outstanding contributors.

David Lazerson, ’77

David Lazerson has been educating and inspiring people as a teacher, musician, and author of several books including Sharing Turf, which recently became a Showtime television movie, Crown Heights, starring Howie Mandel as “Dr. Laz.”

Lazerson received the Teacher of the Year award from New York State for his techniques for reaching students with special needs. He received his Ph.D. in educational research and evaluation from the University at Buffalo in 1996. He currently conducts research on the use of humor and hands-on music for students with profound special needs, which is helping these individuals build self-esteem and social skills.

Stan Szymanski, ’78

Stan Szymanski began his career in the Los Angeles visual effects industry as a graphics and effects producer for Editel/ LA. Later, at Pacific Ocean Post, he supervised the digital film division and line-produced the digital postproduction of more than 200 visual effects shots on Independence Day, 1996 winner of the Academy Award for visual effects.

Today, he is senior vice president of digital production at Sony Pictures Imageworks, where he supervises the direction and day-to-day operation of digital production. During his tenure, Imageworks has created the visual effects for films such as The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and Spider-Man 2. The latter received an Oscar for Achievement in Visual Effects.
