Alumni and Supporters Recognized

BY MARY A. DURLAK

Buffalo State bestowed awards on six alumni and supporters of the college during this year’s Commencement ceremonies. Buffalo State appreciates these generous individuals whose efforts benefit the college’s students.

Distinguished Alumni

Anthony J. Baynes, ’79; Todd W. Brason, ’85; Ronald James Kelley, ’86; and Karen E. Penfold, ’69 (pictured below), received the Distinguished Alumnus Award.

Baynes is a successful entrepreneur who founded the A. J. Baynes Group, headquartered in Buffalo. He also served as chair of the Erie County Fiscal Stability Authority. He has served the college as a member of the Buffalo State College Foundation Board of Directors.

Brason is the chief executive officer of Willcare, a home health care company that employs 1,600 people, including about 800 Western New Yorkers. He has been a member of the Buffalo State College Foundation Board of Directors since 1998 and served as its chair from 2004 to 2007.

Kelley earned a Ph.D. in physics and materials science after graduating from Buffalo State with majors in physics and mathematics. After a distinguished career at Motorola, he launched a successful entrepreneurial career.

Penfold has served as a member of the Buffalo State College Foundation Board of Directors. Her many philanthropic acts toward the college include the establishment of the Karen Kostecky Penfold All College Honors Program Scholarship.

Distinguished Service

The Buffalo State College President’s Distinguished Service Award was given to Gary M. Brost and Benjamin M. Zuffranieri, ’80 (pictured below).

Brost, chairman of Strategic Investments & Holdings Inc., became a member of the Burchfield Penney Art Center Board of Trustees in 2001. As chairman from 2004 to 2006, he was instrumental in securing the funding for the new museum.

Zuffranieri, a partner in the law firm of Hodgson Russ LLP, has served as a member and chair of the Buffalo State College Foundation Board of Directors. He is also a past member of the board of directors of the college’s Alumni Association.
