College Embarks on New Residence Hall Project

The new residence hall is expected to be completed in 2011.

With students’ increased interest in engaging in residence life on campus, Buffalo State College has commissioned Cannon Design to plan and design a new 507-bed student residence hall. The $48.9 million facility, to be constructed by LP Ciminelli Inc., is intended to appeal to upperclassmen who currently reside off campus in the neighboring community. The complex will be constructed on the southwest side of campus on the current site of parking Lot L, along Grant Street.

In keeping with the preferences of today’s resident student, each apartment will boast four single bedrooms, two full baths, and a spacious kitchen and living room. The building also will feature sitting spaces in the corridors, laundry facilities, a recycling center, and a security desk.

For the past several years, Buffalo State has experienced an increase in demand for campus housing, which is consistent with national trends. In fall 2008, the college had more than 2,300 students living on campus, a substantial increase over the previous year. Resident students currently represent 28.4 percent of full-time students at Buffalo State.

In fall 2007, a market study was completed by Brailsford and Dunlavey, a national leader in student housing, to determine the demand for campus housing. The study noted a deficit of 740 bed spaces. Since that time, Buffalo State has taken key steps to address the issue. In January 2008, a renovated Cassety Hall reopened as a residence hall, adding 156 new bed spaces.

The Buffalo State College Foundation and the Alumni Association have partnered with the college to make this project possible.

The new residence hall is expected to be completed for the 2011 spring semester. Funding for the project will be sought through the bond market.
