Philosopher Draws a Crowd

Philosopher Draws a Crowd

Noted author and philosopher of science Michael Ruse drew a crowd of about 500 people to the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall in April.

In his lecture, Ruse discussed the context within which Darwin developed his theory of natural selection and how that theory has shaped—and has been shaped by—the scientific progress that has occurred since Darwin’s On the Origin of Species was published 150 years ago.

“We wanted to mark this year, the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birth, by focusing on his work,” said Amy McMillan, associate professor of biology, who was instrumental in bringing Ruse to campus.

Ruse also met with philosophy and biology students and faculty for a discussion, impressing them with his genuine interest in their work and ideas.
