The union of fashion and art presented guests with a feast for their eyes at Runway 2.0, a one-day event that featured two fashion shows. Each showcased designs created by Buffalo State fashion and textile technology students at the Burchfield Penney Art Center at Buffalo State College. Student designs were inspired by the museum’s Charles E. Burchfield exhibition The Romance of Urban Decay.
“The day exemplified the potential and power of collaboration between the college and the Burchfield Penney,” said Erin Habes, ’03, lecturer of technology. Habes produced last year’s student fashion show, which was staged at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery. This year, professional models joined students on the runway, giving students the thrill of seeing their designs come to life.
Proceeds from the show and sale of merchandise benefited the Buffalo State Fashion and Textile Technology Scholarship Fund. “We raised almost $7,000,” said Elaine Polvinen, professor of technology and coordinator of the fashion and textile program. “We’re approaching $10,000, the minimum amount we need to establish an endowed scholarship fund.”
The evening show, which featured styles by Western New York designers as well as Buffalo State students, included a dessert reception, music by Them Jazzbeards, and dancing after the show. Also in the evening, judges awarded the Nancy Belfer Senior Collection Award to seniors Julia Oakes and Ti Zhou.
Proceeds from the evening show benefited the Burchfield Penney Art Center. “The Burchfield Penney was happy to host the second iteration of Runway in our magnificent East Gallery,” said Ted Pietrzak, director of the Burchfield Penney. “The celebration of fashion as art in Western New York and at Buffalo State was a wonderful opportunity to transform the museum and to support an important college initiative.”
