INTELLECTUAL FOUNDATIONS

I.F. PROGRAM STRUCTURE

Advising Codes (letters and numbers) are in parentheses.

Foundations of Inquiry: BSC 101. Required in the first year at Buffalo State for students entering with fewer than 57 credits.

Basic Writing: CWP 101 & CWP 102.1 (7) College Writing I & II or their equivalents.

Mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning.2 (X) One designated course of at least 3 credits, which may satisfy multiple requirements.

Cognate Foundations: Arts. (J) Two designated courses in two different disciplines (course prefixes) for a total of at least 6 credits.

 Cognate Foundations: Humanities. (Q) Two designated courses in two different disciplines (course prefixes) for a total of at least 6 credits. 

Cognate Foundations: Natural Sciences. (K) Two designated courses in two different disciplines (course prefixes) for a total of at least 6 credits.

Cognate Foundations: Social Sciences. (Y) Two designated courses in two different disciplines (course prefixes) for a total of at least 6 credits.

Foundations of Civilizations: American History. (1) One designated 3-credit course.

Foundations of Civilizations: Western Civilization.3 (4) One designated 3-credit course.

Foundations of Civilizations: Non-Western Civilizations.3 (5) One designated 3-credit course.

Technology & Society. (L) One designated 3-credit course, which may satisfy multiple requirements.

Diversity. (8) One designated 3-credit course, which may satisfy multiple requirements.

Basic Oral Communication. (P) One designated 3-credit course, which may satisfy multiple requirements.

Writing Across the Curriculum. (W) One or more designated courses for a total of 6 credits. Writing Across the Curriculum courses may satisfy multiple requirements.

Foreign Language. (F) Two semesters of a single foreign language or the equivalent.4

1Some students may be exempted from CWP 101 and/or CWP 102.

2 Students cannot be exempted from this requirement. Students must complete MAT 097or MAT 098 or the equivalent before taking the Mathematics & Quantitative Reasoning required course unless they have completed 3 years of high school math or attained an SAT math score of 460 or an ACT math score of 16.

3 Western and Non-Western Civilizations may be combined into a single, 6-credit World Civilizations (6) course.

The SUNY Trustee requirements for critical thinking and information management are infused in BSC 101, and reinforced throughout the Intellectual Foundations program. Higher order critical thinking and information management skills are infused in every major.
