Should I take Foundations of Inquiry (BSC 101)?

All Students who enter Buffalo State with fewer than 57 credits must take BSC 101 except in the rare case of a student whose general education program is the General Education 2000 (GE2k) instead of the Intellectual Foundations program.

Am I in the Intellectual Foundations Program?

  1. Undergraduate students entering Buffalo State, who began college as freshmen (anywhere) on or after Fall 2006, must complete the Intellectual Foundations Program and must complete Foundations of Inquiry (BSC 101) in their first year. 
  2. Undergraduate students transferring to Buffalo State,who entered college (anywhere) before Fall 2006, must complete the General Education 2000 requirements and may not elect the Intellectual Foundations Program.
  3. Students continuously enrolled in Buffalo State in GE 2000 or prior general education programs (GEC) cannot petition to be in Intellectual Foundations.
  4. Undergraduate students who are readmitted to Buffalo State College after an absence of two years or more will be placed in the Intellectual Foundations program if their total credits are less than the total expected of students who entered in Fall 2006, assuming 15 credits each Fall and Spring semester.  Example: A student who returns in Fall 2007 with 27 credits would be placed in the Intellectual Foundations Program because the Fall 2006 cohort should be at 30 credits. A who student returns in Fall 20007 with 33 credits would be placed in the General Education 2000 program (GE2k). 
  5. Students entering with AA or AS (but not AAS) degrees may waive one course in each of the following Intellectual Foundations categories: Arts, Humanities, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences and Technology & Society.
  6. Transferred courses that fulfill SUNY general education requirements also fulfill Intellectual Foundations requirements.

Am I "Officially" Enrolled in the Intellectual Foundations Program? 

You can check this by looking in Degree Navigator where the name of your degree is listed.  If the letters IF are included, then you are in the Intellectual Foundations program.  In the following example, the IF follow a BA code (BA 10IF;BAGEIF;0723):
