GENISIS OF SCHOLARSHIP ACTIVITIES
o The expanding collection of aerospace materials produced by NASA for use in outer-space has been the focus of Professor Postero’s research efforts for the past 30 years. As a former hospital designer she was introduced to 'exotic' technologies which dictated changes in the way spaces were both used and designed. New equipment required the development of new interior finishes and greater concern for environmental issues such as interior temperature, lighting, and acoustic controls. She considers herself to be a "technology transfer tracker".
o Although the presentation vehicle has varied and the audiences have been interdisciplinary, international, and intergenerational, the central topic of discussion generally featured specific aerospace/technology transfer material discoveries or insights which make new design innovations possible. She discussed some of these in a co-authored paper "Omnidirectional Spatial Order” and in more detail in her paper "Aerospace Technology Transfer: Environmentally Benign Systems".
o She has been a member of IIAS (International Institute of Advanced Studies) since 1986 and participated in a yearly conference held in Baden-Baden Germany (and one-year in Carlsbad-Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic). This arena offered opportunities for her to consider Interior Design issues in a non-traditional setting. For example, while attending an IIAS conference (co-sponsored by UNESCO) which called for positions on a Culture of Peace, she proposed interior design strategies for designing for a Culture of Peace in the paper entitled “Shrouds of Life”. This was followed by “Windows for Peace” (which emphasized window types as a conduit for personal and social evolution) and by “Interior Design Spectrum for a Culture of Peace” (which explored the three-faceted role of a triangular prism used as a metaphor for Interior Design process: attitudes, behavior, and control). Building on the co-authored paper “Chasing the Wave: The Design of Contemporary Life” she wrote “Wave-bowered Spaces: Harbingers of Change for the Way We Live” (which considered the wave motif used in Interior Design and Architecture as a visual metaphor or perceptual registration of living on the cusp of a new millennium).
o A number of her presentations were the result of collaborative efforts with scholars; some in other professions. These presentations offered opportunities for her to learn about non-interior design disciplines and to propose material/technological applications in unfamiliar fields. A paper written with architect and interior designer, Ted Maciurzynski, "Architectural Commentary: Newspeak in 1994", observed examples of Orwellian-Newspeak-bias for descriptions of Interior Design spaces found both in professional journals and in more commercially oriented tabloid magazines.
o Building on her previous paper “Shrouds of Life” (which proposed interior designs to support a world culture of peace), Professor Postero worked with interior designer, Jane Lily, to expand the topic in the paper “Weaving the Shrouds of Life; Interior Design for a Culture of Peace".
o Mutual interest in fine art, museum display and Internet development resulted in collaboration with professor of computer science, John Hiller (University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia). They co-authored three papers “The Electronic Gallery Tour – Framing Aspects" (which explored the merits of the Virtual Gallery); “Communications & Stereotypes in Art” (which examined the relevance to art of the classic model for communication); and “Communications and Art – Internet Influences” (which considered the challenges of Internet navigation).
o One of her more unusual alliances was with geneticist, Markus Thomas Rojewski (Freie Universität Berlin, Berlin, Germany). In their paper “Tuning up the Human Genome” they investigated genetic information sequences and applied them to music and architecture. Another co-authored collaboration was with art/design historian, Dr. Arlette Klaric. Their paper “Chasing the Wave: The Design of Contemporary Life” was a survey of the wave motif used in interior design, architecture, fashion, and transportation.
o In two subsequent papers, “Wave-bowered Spaces: Harbingers of Change for the Way We Live,” and “Spatial Order: Über-Waves in Interior Design” Professor Postero concentrated on the expanded subject of the wave motif used in interior design and architecture through technology-transferred materials and processes, and theorized on implications for the future.
o The International Institute for Advanced Studies in Systems Research and Cybernetics has acknowledged Professor Postero’s scholarship efforts. In 1997, 1998 and 2003 she earned Awards for the Best Symposium Paper. The Award of Excellence in Scholarly Research was conferred in 2001 and in 2003 she was presented with the IIAS-Meritorious Award in recognition and appreciation of work and service over 17 years to the scientific community. Most recently she was elected FELLOW of the Institute in recognition of outstanding scholarly work and her contribution to the advancement of knowledge in the field.
