Student activities include a Spanish Club (Amigos de la Tertulia), a French Club (La Table Francaise), and a German Club. Eligible students are inducted into local chapters of Sigma Delta Pi (National Spanish Honor Society) and Pi Delta Phi (National French Honor Society).
Other opportunities for students include teaching English at Journey’s End Refugee Center, internships at organizations like Hispanos Unidos, and paid work opportunities at the Language Resource Center.
Department facilities and features include the Language Resource Center, where students can listen to CDs or view videotapes in French, Spanish, Italian, German, Mandarin Chinese, or Swahili. CDs now come with all textbooks.
Buffalo State College hosted a French Language Professional Development Series in conjunction with the Western New York Chapter of the American Association of teachers of French (AATF) during the 2008-2009 school year. This nine-part series was designed for high school and middle school French teachers. For the past two years, the education section of the department held all day Technology, Literacy and Lote: Pathways to Proficiency workshops in April.
