Mark K. Warford, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Spanish and Foreign Language Education, Buffalo State (SUNY)

After five years of K-12 language teaching, Dr. Warford obtained a Ph.D. in Foreign Language and ESL Education from The University of Tennessee in 2000, where he was named the department’s Outstanding Graduate Student Award.

In 2002, Warford received the NYSAFLT Papalia Professional Article Award. Overall, he has published over a dozen articles in refereed journals and chapters in published proceedings on a variety of topics including: teacher development, applied linguistics, sociocultural theory and educational innovation.

Warford has an extensive record of service to the profession. A charter member of the NCATE Board of Reviewers, Warford leads program reviews for the ACTFL-NCATE Program Standards. Under his leadership, Buffalo State's Foreign Language Education program was one of the first in the state to attain ACTFL-NCATE National Recognition status, a distinction that was recently upheld in a subsequent review. He regularly reviews manuscripts for a variety of refereed journals including: Foreign Language Annals, Hispania, and Teaching and Teacher Education. In addition, Warford has served on the Board of Directors for NYSAFLT, WNYFLEC and NYSAFLT-Rochester. He has also served as one of two higher education liaisons to the NYSED Languages Other Than English Associate.

From the local to international level, he has delivered numerous presentations/workshops at professional conferences including: WNYFLEC, NYSAFLT-Rochester, NYSAFLT, NECTFL, AAAL, AATSP, ACTFL and the Biennial International Conference on Language Teacher Education. He regularly presents workshops to local K-12 foreign language teachers on the topics of teaching in the target language, standards-based instruction, literacy and culture-integrated language teaching and motivation in language learning. A certified peer reviewer for the online course oversight organization, Quality Matters, Warford also regularly leads workshops related to innovation in online instruction.
