Historical Background
Dr. Robert B. Cantrick (1917-2006), composer and music professor at Buffalo State College, 1969-1985, gifted the Butler Library with copies of his major compositions for study and use. Dr. Cantrick’s music is of interest for its pioneering use of new flute sounds and its characteristic employment of other avant garde compositional techniques. Dr. Cantrick also donated to Buffalo State College what is thought to be the only extant copy of his reconstruction of the concert band version of Gustav Holst’s Hammersmith.
Dr. Cantrick’s family will soon provide Butler with the originals of Dr. Cantrick’s musical compositions, as well as a CD of his ground-breaking unfinished scholarly monograph, “Semantics of Music Scholarship: Concepts True of All Music,” in hopes that his work might be made widely available for study and performance.
The material and its use are under certain restrictions. Please contact the Archivist for information on the material.
Please see more information on Dr. Cantrick’s life and works at: http://cantrick-semantics-music.csdco.com/index.html.
Further information on the Robert B. Cantrick Collection at Buffalo State College’s Archives and Special Collections will be forthcoming.
