The Charles Rand Penney Art Library Collection, comprised of approximately 3,814 titles on art and art-related books was officially opened to patrons on May 10, 2000. In March 2000, Charles Rand Penney, a noted art collector and patron of the arts, donated his collection to Buffalo State College where it will support the college's art programs and provides an added benefit for those interested in researching 20th century art. The collection is housed in E. H. Butler Library.
Dr. Penney is a lawyer, civic worker, philanthropist, explorer and nationally known-art collector. In 1995 he was awarded a Doctorate of Fine Arts from the State University of New York, highlighting not only his fine collections, but also his continuing interest, support and erudition regarding local and global arts and art issues. Dr. Penney's donations of works by
watercolorist Charles Burchfield to the Burchfield-Penney Art Center merged with the center's collection of Burchfield paintings
has made this center one of the preeminent resources for admirers of this important 20th century artist.
