Buffalo State College
Library Instruction

Introduction

Buffalo State faculty, staff, and student organizations may bring classes or groups to E. H. Butler Library for instruction in doing library research. Most library instruction sessions occur during regularly scheduled class time in a computerized classroom located in the library.

Librarians have discovered that students benefit most from library instruction when their professors provide clearly developed research assignments, prior to the library instruction session. In order to best address information literacy learning objectives, it is highly recommended that a library research assignment is assigned in conjunction with the library instruction session.

In order to maximize the effectiveness of library instruction, the following guidelines have been established:
  • Requests must be submitted at least two weeks prior to the date that the instruction session is needed.

  • Requests for instruction should be accompanied by a copy of the research assignment. Assignments should specify the purpose of the paper or project, the number and types of sources to be used, and the requested citation style.

  • It is recommended that students know their research topic(s) prior to the library session. If a basic library orientation class is being requested with no research paper assignment given, it is suggested that a simple research assignment be developed in collaboration with the instructing librarian.

  • The instructor's presence at the session is welcomed and required.
To arrange for library instruction for a class or group, use the online request form below. You may also visit or call the Butler Library Reference Desk at 878-6300. If you call or visit please be prepared to provide the following information:
  • Course number and name.
  • Date(s) and time(s) requested. Please provide two or three preferences.
  • Estimated number of students.
  • The name of the librarian you would like to conduct the class, if you have a preference.
  • Class assignment.
  • What you would like covered in the class, eg., periodical databases, the library catalog, World Wide Web, etc.
The librarian who is going to teach your class will contact you to confirm the date(s) and to discuss learning objectives. A copy of the class syllabus may be requested at this time. We will make every effort to accommodate your needs, but availability of dates, librarians, and rooms is allocated on a first come basis. It is best to plan early before the semester rush begins.
