How to Access the Wireless Network

To access the network via wireless, your laptop will need a wireless card that supports either 802.11b or 802.11g and is set up for DHCP. The SSID for all of the wireless at Buffalo State is "bscwlan". If you are running XP it should find the network automatically, but you will have to check the box that says it is OK to connect without encryption.

Once you have the wireless connection, you will need to open a Web browser (such as Microsoft Internet Explorer). Enter your Buffalo State NT username and password when prompted. You don't need to put "bsclogon" in front of it.

Once you are authenticated, it will continue on to the Web site you requested. The current timeout is 10 minutes of inactivity, after which it will prompt you again for username and password. The IP address and username will be logged with a timestamp so that we can track any potential problems.

Security

Because wireless standards are still evolving, wireless networks are inherently less secure than wired networks. Therefore, Buffalo State cannot guarantee the privacy of your data and communications while using the campus wireless service.

Buffalo State recommends that users of the wireless service take all necessary precautions to secure their laptop devices and wireless Internet transmissions. You are strongly advised to use secure applications and connections such as SSH and HTTPS.

Wireless Locations (Hot Spots)

Butler Library’s wireless network includes access in the main lobby, StudyQuad, Copier Lounge, the Information Commons, and Creative Studies balcony. On campus, wireless access points have been installed in the Student Union, where wireless service is available in the Fireside Lounge, Commuter Lounge, Assembly Hall and surrounding hallway, and the upper and lower areas of the main floor. The Bulger Communication Center lobby also has wireless access.

Wireless Printing

Wireless printing is available to Buffalo State students, faculty, and staff. Windows 2000 and Windows XP computers, including on-campus wireless laptops and off-campus home computers, can be configured to send print jobs to any printer in the library.

Before you can use the service, you will need to download, unzip, and install the client installation package on your Windows 2000 or Windows XP computer.

Setting Up Your Computer

1. Download the appropriate .zip package to your desktop (right-click and select "Save Target As"): 2. Double click the .zip file to extract the files. There will be two files: the printer setup package (something.exe) and the registry patch (Registry.bat). If you don't have a compression utility, try WinZip.

3. Double-click the .exe file.

4. Click the "Install" button.

5. Once installation is complete, click the "Finish" button.

6. Now double click the file called "Registry.bat." A command prompt window will appear then quickly disappear.
