Ref ML 128 M78 B6 1996 Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians An authoritative brief-entry biographical dictionary, this six-volume source exceeds 4,000 pages and contains entries on composers, musicians, ethnomusicologists, and more. Some of the entries have a list of the individual's works, and a brief bibliography of additional relevant sources. Coverage includes people associated with classical music as well as jazz, pop, rock, and blues. Ref ML 105 B16 2001 Encyclopedia of Popular Music This is an excellent eight-volume work that contains entries on thousands of rock, pop, jazz performers, and bands. A brief discography is usually appended to each article. Ref ML 102 P66 G84 1998 International Dictionary of Black Composers The preface to this publication says it "provides information about a cross-section of composers of African heritage who reside in locations around the world...[and] contains not only biographical sketches, work lists, bibliographies, and discographies but also critical essays about the composers and some of their most important works." Genres covered include African-American vernacular music (including spirituals, blues, and jazz), concert-hall music, and more. Ref ML 105 I5 1999 New Grove Dictionary of American Music A wide range of American music topics -- from classical to folk -- is covered in this four-volume source. Many articles contain sources for further reading. Ref ML 101 U6 N48 1986 New Grove Dictionary of Musical Instruments Background information on well-known and obscure musical instruments is contained in this multi-volume set, which includes pictures and diagrams. Ref ML 102 I5 N48 1984 New Grove Dictionary of Opera This four-volume work thoroughly covers the field of opera. When you're finished reading this massive source, the fat lady does indeed sing! Ref ML 102 O6 N5 1998 New Oxford Companion to Music The preface to this source states it is "oriented towards the general reader" and "aimed chiefly at readers...interested in the Western [music] historical tradition." There are entries on composers, musical works, musical instruments, acoustics, musical forms, musical notation, non-Western music genres, and beyond.
