Scholarly Journals vs. Popular Magazines

What are the differences?

For academic papers and projects, your instructor will often require that your research include articles from scholarly journals rather than popular magazines. If you have a difficult time deciding whether periodical resources are journals or magazines, these Web sites may help.

What is a peer reviewed journal?

Peer reviewed journals, also called refereed journals, publish articles that have undergone a process of review prior to their publication to ensure that the articles reflect solid scholarship in the field. Articles are reviewed by scholars and experts with an educational or professional background similar to the author. This results in quality information that has a high level of credibility and reliability.

To find articles in peer reviewed journals, search Butler Library’s mega database, Peer Reviewed Articles EZ. If you have a journal title and don’t know if it is peer reviewed, look it up in Ulrich’s Periodicals Directory.
