Denise Miller

Bio:
Denise Amodeo Miller is a poet, writer and teacher living in Kenmore, NY. A graduate of both Buffalo State and Medaille Colleges, she re-ignited her love of writing in Fall 2006, when she joined The Buffalo Writers Meetup Group. Her award winning poetry appears in Sol Magazine, and in two local anthologies, Just Buffalo Literary Center's Buffalo Anthology - Spring 2008 and Trees of Surprise - Fall 2007. On a balmy Buffalo springtime day (It's not Alaska, ya know, people! We do get some terrific weather), she enjoyed performing her poetry at Buffalo's Largest Live Poetry Event, Urban Epiphany 2007, which can be heard at Think Twice Radio. Poems:

The Richness of Beef

My grandmother's roast beef was chewy
rich with fat and juices
roasted brown with carrots and celery
celery with strings
teeth flossed and tongue tested

Ah, but the beef....
departed and primal carcass
smelling of the porch swing
enveloped in my father’s arms
Jumbling the words on paper
dreading the morning
and wishing the meat frozen still

God’s Almighty Wind

Boy
Feeling brave and new
Knowing torment
Knowing pain
See the freshness of the dawn as
Closeness calls to see him through

He finds his solace in prayer
He finds his savior
He finds release
She knows him now

God beckons the righteous
Screams with a mighty breath
That tries to drown the noise of youth
Yet heaven tastes like snow compared

Together they are one
Bound with palms pressed yet
Instinct gives way to innocent
Awashed in doubt and condemned

He finds life twisted
Grotesque
Unrecognizable
Mangled in loves wake

Sinners come forth with no pretense
No hesitation
And he tries to say, “You do not know me”
Without a word

And so the bell rings solemnly alone

Now he must be still
He must atone
He feels the need to reverberate newness
Without leaving the flock
Keeping near the one

But he finds no way
Reverting to more pain
More wages
More airlessness

Down through the sludge
The damp muddy ground below
The life forces swirling
Causing havoc and terror

Tie the rope!
Tighter to the limb
Tie the rope!
