Welcome! We look forward to working with you.

Please consult this Web site to help you identify the key services, policies, and contacts that will assist you during your first semester at Buffalo State.

Butler Library is…

  • An extensive collection of resources in a variety of formats, including over half a million books and over 20,000 full-text journal titles.

  • A place to study, to work on a computer (we have approximately 150 for your use), to get help, to relax…to learn!

  • A staff of over 50 friendly, helpful people to support your research needs.

    Where should you start?

Get help! Come to the Information Commons to ask directions, check out a book, purchase supplies, or ask a reference librarian for help with your research. People are here to help you!
    • Reference librarians are available at the Reference Desk at the Information Commons in the lower lobby during reference hours.

    • Get Research Help 24/7 from librarians at the reference desk, by phone or e-mail, and through our live chat reference service. You can even set up an appointment if you need research assistance.

    • Student assistants in orange t-shirts can help with e-mail, word processing, spreadsheets, and other computer applications.

    • Buffalo State ID card - Staff at the Information Commons will issue your Buffalo State ID card, the multipurpose photo ID for students, faculty, and staff. Your Buffalo State ID card is used to check out materials and reserve items at Butler Library, for photocopies and computer printouts, and for late-night admittance to the StudyQuad. It can also be used to check out materials at other SUNY libraries.

Find your way around! Like most college and research libraries, we use the Library of Congress Classification system to organize our books and media items.
    • Pick up a library map while you're here or consult our online library maps.

    • Want a preview? Take a virtual tour of the library.
Explore our resources! The library has virtually everything you'll need for an outstanding academic experience: Attend a computer workshop! Learn to use PowerPoint, Excel, and other computer applications. For more information and to sign up for a workshop, e-mail Paul Reynolds.

Get studying! There are many comfortable spots for you to study. Here are some favorites: Relax… the lobby is just one area in the library for relaxation.
