Buffalo State College
Guidelines for Faculty: Placing Materials on Reserve/Using ANGEL for E-Reserves

Frequently Asked Questions

What Are Reserve Materials?
Reserve materials are collections of books and articles separated from the general library collection and assigned restrictive loan periods to assure greater availability to patrons. Nonbook items that are required listening or viewing may be put on reserve in Media Services.

What Can Be Placed On Reserve?
Library books, personal books, copies of journal articles, book chapters, examinations. The library complies with the Copyright Law (Title 17, United States Code). Anthologies and compilations of copyrighted materials cannot be accepted for reserve without prior written permission from the copyright holder. No exceptions to the law will be made.

How Do I Place Materials On Reserve?
Use our online course reserve form to submit your requests. See the directions at left to submit the form--and your scanned materials--online. If you prefer, you can fill out the Web form (by either typing in the fields and then printing, or printing the form and then filling it out by hand), and bring it to the Information Commons desk, along with the materials you want placed on reserve.

How do I use ANGEL for E-Reserves?
E-Reserves are managed through ANGEL, Buffalo State’s Learning Management System. You may submit your e-reserves requests online following the instructions on the left for “Submitting Reserve Requests Online: Instructions for Faculty.” Butler Library will add the content to your ANGEL course site. Before submitting requests, please note that faculty who opt to use ANGEL must participate in a training workshop and request a course site each semester. For information on ANGEL training, requesting a course site, and for ANGEL documentation, see the Electronic Learning ANGEL Web page.

How Many Copies of Each Item Can I Place On Reserve?
In order to comply with the Fair Use provision of the Copyright Law, Title 17 of the United States Code, the library can accept a single photocopy of a copyrighted work for one semester without written permission of the copyright holder. If additional copies are requested, and copyright permission is obtained, one copy per ten students can be put on reserve, with no more than three copies per item.

How Do I Obtain Copyright Permission?
It is the responsibility of the instructor to apply for copyright permission if needed.

When Should I Submit Reserve Materials?
Reserve lists are processed in the order they are received. Submit lists three weeks prior to the semester to guarantee availability when classes begin. Materials submitted after the start of classes are processed as quickly as possible.

What Are the Loan Periods For Reserve?
You may specify any of the following loan periods for your materials:

  • 2 hours, library use only
  • 2 hours and overnight after 3 p.m.
  • 4 hours, library use only
  • 3 days
  • 7 days
Students are allowed to borrow only three reserve items at one time. Overdue fines are charged if items are returned late.

How Will My Students Identify My Reserve Materials?
Students will find reserve materials by searching course reserves. Encourage your students to make a printout of the needed items to take with them to the Information Commons. Please do not give students reading assignments until your reserve list has been processed and materials are available.

When Are Materials Removed from Reserve?
All materials will automatically be removed from reserve at the end of the semester unless an extension has been requested.
