The scholars accepted to the McNair Program participate in a funded summer research program during their sophomore and junior summers.  The program is held during session A of the summer semester.

Students are given instruction in research, library skills, and writing skills during their sophomore summer.  They also participate in various graduate and career development  workshops and are given the opportunity to observe fellow scholars research presentations. Students are encouraged to choose a faculty mentor and project at this time.

In their junior summer research program students are fully immersed in completing a research project. They also receive classes in GRE preparation, posterboard production, SPSS, and introductory teaching skills.  The culmination of the program is a Research Symposium where students are given the opportunity to present their research to fellow scholars, faculty, friends, and family.
