The Buffalo State College Music Department has the fastest growing undergraduate Music Education program in the SUNY system. As the only SUNY music department located in an urban setting, musical and pedagogical opportunities exist here that cannot be replicated elsewhere. The multicultural City of Buffalo provides the perfect setting to train the music educators of tomorrow.
Our many performing ensembles, supported by a dedicated music staff of world-class faculty and performing artists, allow students to explore and discover their performance potential. Applied music instruction is offered in strings, wind, brass, percussion, piano, and voice.
The bachelor's degree in music education leads to a New York State Initial Teaching Certificate. The program requires intensive study in music performance, music history, music theory, music technology, and methodology of teaching, with special focus on world music and urban culture.
The B.A. in music provides students with the broad knowledge and skills to enjoy a lifetime of music, integrate music into a variety of exciting careers, and performance.
We have a profound commitment to excellence in music studies and music teacher preparation. In 2008, the Music Department received accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).
