Lisa Hunter joined the faculty of Buffalo State College in 2006 as Coordinator of Music Education and Assistant Professor of Music. Hunter teaches courses in instrumental methods, curriculum, and music technology as well as supervises student teachers. Her most recent endeavors include presentations for the Erie County Music Educators Association, New York State School Music Association, Society for Music Teacher Education, Music Educators National Conference, and American Educational Research Association. Hunter has also been selected to participate in the Buffalo State College Emerging Leaders Program.
Previous to her appointment at Buffalo State College, Hunter was the Director of Bands at Montana State University. During her tenure, she was selected to receive the Montana State University Award for Excellence in 2003 and 2004. This award recognizes excellence in teaching and mentoring across the campus. Hunter directed the MSU Wind Ensemble, University Band, Spirit of the West Marching Band and Bobcat Pep Band. In addition, she taught instrumental methods, instrumental conducting, supervised student teachers, and taught graduate music education courses.
Hunter received a B.A. degree in saxophone performance and a B.S. degree in music education from the University of Mary in Bismarck, North Dakota. She received a M.M. degree in instrumental conducting and a Ph.D. degree in music education from the University of Arizona, Tucson. In addition, Hunter is qualified to administer and interpret the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator®, a personality inventory based on Carl Jung's theory of psychological types.
As a conductor and director at the secondary and collegiate levels, Hunter’s ensembles have received outstanding recognition. She travels the country as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator for secondary and collegiate bands and marching bands. Recent workshop topics include: interpersonal communication skills in the instrumental ensemble and advanced rehearsal techniques.
In addition to Hunter's fervor as a conductor and performer, she prioritizes her commitment to music teacher education. Her research agenda includes development and use of interpersonal communication skills in the instrumental ensemble, MBTI® type in music education, ensemble lesson planning and curriculum development, and partnerships in music teacher education programs. Hunter's innovative teaching practice and course design afford her students many opportunities to gain valuable teaching experience at the undergraduate level.
