Internships
Internships offer students the chance to apply their knowledge to real-world situations. Students in the School of Natural and Social Sciences have been involved in many diverse internships, such as monitoring water quality on one of the Great Lakes Center's research vessels, working with adolescents who have substance abuse problems, working in a forensics laboratory, and tutoring children in the Niagara Falls school district.
If you are interested in participating in an internship, the first step is to contact your major department. Each NSS department has its own guidelines about internships. Your department office is the place to begin.
You will need to find a faculty sponsor for your internship, and your faculty sponsor will serve as your supervisor and assign your grade. You will also have an on-site supervisor at the internship location; he or she will monitor and evaluate your progress.
In addition to the on-site work experiences, internships may involve readings and a paper on the topic of your internship. Sometimes you will keep a journal of your experiences. You and your faculty supervisor will jointly determine exactly what your responsibilities will be and how your grade will be determined.
