Questions to Ask in Interviews

  1. What is a typical career path in your organization?
  2. How is an employee evaluated and promoted? Is it organization policy to promote from within?
  3. How does my position fit with the mission and performance of this organization?
  4. Describe the typical first year assignments.
  5. In your opinion, what are the greatest challenges this organization faces in the next few years?
  6. What support does the organization provide to your new hires?
  7. What are the organization's plans for future growth?
  8. I would like to know about your own history with the organization: How long have you been here, what positions have you held and what do you like best about working here?
  9. What makes your firm different from others in your field?
  10. What are the next steps in your hiring process and when might I expect to hear from you again?
  11. What are the organization's strengths and weaknesses?
  12. How would you describe your organization's environment and management style?
  13. What are your expectations for new hires?
  14. What is the overall structure of the department where the position is located?
  15. What qualities are you looking for in your new hires?
  16. What characteristics does a successful person have at your organization?
  17. Ask for any clarification of the duties and responsibilities of the position.
  18. Could you describe the atmosphere (feeling, tone) of the department? How do the people there relate to one another?
  19. What are the long range plans for this department?
  20. Do you have any reservations about my qualifications that I can address for you?
