DISCOVER

What is DISCOVER?

DISCOVER is an interactive computer-assisted career guidance system that provides information about occupations, schools, and academic majors. This system will help you learn more about yourself and identify occupations that may be right for you, but will not provide easy answers or make decisions for you. The DISCOVER system can help with:

  • Learning about the World of Work.

  • Identifying work-related interests, abilities, and values.

  • Finding and investigating occupations (over 500 descriptions).

  • Choosing or changing a major.

  • Researching graduate and professional schools.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT WHEN USING DISCOVER?

DISCOVER is divided into four sections (halls). You will only be using the first two halls. Hall 1 is entitled "Learning About Self and Career". This section offers a series of questions (inventories) to help you become more aware of yourself. These inventories include the

  • UNIACT Interest Inventory (90 items)

  • Inventory of Work-Related Abilities (15 items)

  • Inventory of Work-Related Values (61 items)
After you complete these inventories, DISCOVER will use this information to connect you to career fields that correspond to your interests, abilities, and values. Hall 2 is entitled "Choose Occupations". This section offers you an opportunity to develop a list of occupations to explore. You can review detailed descriptions to determine which occupations most interest you. Within these occupational descriptions are internet hyperlinks that can take you to additional information about your occupation of choice.

HOW LONG WILL DISCOVER TAKE?

Most students take an hour and a half to complete DISCOVER. An important feature about DISCOVER is that you can work at your own pace. The DISCOVER system will save all the data you put in each time you use it.

WILL I NEED TO KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT COMPUTERS?

NO! The program is very "user-friendly". Staff from the Career Development Center (CDC) will give you a short introduction on how to use the computer, and then you can operate the system on your own.

WHEN CAN YOU USE DISCOVER?

DISCOVER appointments are available during regular office hours. Sign up for an appointment in GC 306 or call 878-5811.

HOW ELSE CAN THE CAREER DEVELOPMENT CENTER HELP?

After using DISCOVER you should make a follow up appointment with a career counselor to review your results. You will learn that DISCOVER is only one of many services the CDC offers to assist you in deciding on a career, major, or graduate school. Although we often recommend you start by using DISCOVER, computers are not for everyone. If you do not want to use DISCOVER, you may want to meet with a career counselor to discuss your career plans.
