Frequently Asked Questions

1. What would you like to be doing five years from now?

2. What are your career objectives? future plans? personal goals?

3. Why did you choose our city? Are you willing to move here?

4. Why are you interested in doing social work?

5. What kind of experience have you had with different populations? (i.e., women, youth, terminally ill, etc.)

6. What are your attitudes towards supervision (doing it, do you need it? will you refuse it? how do you react to it?)

7. Why do you want to work with the elderly? mentally retarded, etc?

8. What is your knowledge of disabilities?

9. What types of clients have you worked with?

10. What is your background and philosophy of social work? counseling?

11. What are your counseling strengths and weaknesses?

Two common interview techniques used in social service interviews are role plays and case presentations. Case situations are often presented and candidates are asked to explain the course of action they would take and how they would handle the client(s). You might be asked to give your assessment and/or treatment plan.
