Service-Learning Faculty Checklist

Before the course begins:

  • Meet with Service-Learning Faculty Coordinator, Dr. Gary Welborn, or VSLC Coordinator, Laura Hill Rao to describe your plans and solicit assistance.
  • Meet with the community organization with whom your students will be working. VSLC staff are available to facilitate this partnership meeting.
  • Revise your course description to state specific objectives for the service-learning component. Faculty Coordinator Dr. Gary Welborn is available for assistance and information.

    Student Orientation at the beginning of the semester:

  • Arrange for optional classroom visit/orientation by the Service-Learning Coordinator.
  • Arrange for classroom visit by the organization staff if applicable.

    Mid-Semester:

  • Connect with community organizations to see how the students are doing.
  • Provide time in class for students report out or reflect on their service.

    Before the end of the semester:

  • Arrange for some kind of closure/reflection time for the students involving the organization(s) and SL coordinators.
  • Remind students to submit their hourly service and evaluation reports.
  • Complete the faculty evaluation form and submit to SL Coordinator.
  • Write a letter of thanks to the organization(s) for their role in the students learning.
