Learn and Serve

Buffalo State’s Learn and Serve Grant

Through a collaborative effort between faculty and staff and the West Side Community Collaborative (WSCC), a Corporation for National and Community Service Learn and Serve grant was awarded to Buffalo State in October 2003. Buffalo State was the only New York State recipient of a 2003 Learn and Serve grant. The grant, entitled The Civic Engagement Project: Learning in the Service of Community, aims to:
  • Improve student learning while improving WNY communities by integrating service-learning into the Buffalo State curriculum
  • Build a stronger relationship between Buffalo State and the surrounding community through projects with our primary partner, the West Side Community Collaborative, and other community groups
  • Provide training and staff support for faculty who integrate service-learning into their courses through the Volunteer and Service-Learning Center

The WSCC is a collaboration of over 30 West Side nonprofit, community- and faith-based organizations, plus representatives from local public and private schools. Through a year-long planning process they developed and are currently implementing the 2nd year of a 5-Year Action Plan. The plan includes 40 separate projects designed to improve area neighborhood housing, communication and partnerships, economic development, education and recreation, health, and public safety. The WSCC target area (bounded by Richmond, North, West, Hampshire, W. Ferry) includes one of Buffalo’s oldest neighborhoods, major transportation corridors, commercial centers, business districts, cultural and historic venues.

Of the 40 WSCC projects, seven project areas have been identified that match community needs with Buffalo State strengths and resources. A number of Buffalo State faculty and staff have participated in the planning and implementation of WSCC projects already, laying the groundwork for a strong campus-community partnership.
