Get Involved with Community Service!

  • Buffalo State students can volunteer for one-time, short term or ongoing projects with community agencies.
  • Individuals or groups of students can assist with projects.
  • Examples include but are not limited to, tutoring, mentoring, clerical work, mailings, fundraisers, or special events.

  • On the left hand side of the page click on, SEARCH Volunteer by Category or View All Volunteer.
  • If you select "By Category" you must now select a Job/Internship Target, and Location.
  • If you select "View All Volunteer" if will list all volunteer opportunities.
Buffalo State College Community Service Day: April 25, 2009 from 8:30am - 1:00pm. Lunch is provided! Volunteers are needed to help plant trees and bulbs, clean-up local green spaces including park areas and community gardens, and conduct other community revitalization projects. Community Service Day is sponsored by the VSLC, with funding from the Auxiliary Services Grant Allocation Committee and the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs. Register at the Volunteer and Service-Learning Center in Cleveland Hall 306, call 878-5811, or e-mail your intent to vslc@buffalostate.edu.

Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper will be promoting rain barrels at the upcoming Phantasia: A Garden Party, the premier garden and landscape show of Western New York. They are looking for volunteers to take on 4-hour shifts at the rain barrel exhibit to educate the public about Riverkeeper and sell rain barrels. Phantasia will be held the weekend of March 26-29 from 10am to 9pm at the Agri-Center at the Hamburg Fair Grounds. Volunteers will receive a free t-shirt. Personal transportation is required. The New York Central Terminal in Buffalo was a key railroad station from 1929 to 1979. The 17-story Art Deco style station was designed by architects Fellheimer & Wagner for the New York Central Railroad. The building was abandoned for several years but is now owned by the Buffalo Central Terminal Restoration Corporation. The Corporation is looking for volunteers to assist in its Dyngus Day Celebration and upcoming season. Volunteers are needed on the following days:

March 15th to help with Dyngus Day set-up and cleanup starting at 9:00am and ending around 1:00pm. Volunteers will be cleaning the restaurant and entrance area. Individuals are encouraged to dress warm and to bring gloves and cleaning items if possible. A light lunch will be served. If you are interested in helping, just show up that day (495 Paderewski Drive, Buffalo); everyone is welcome.

March 24th for the Dyngus Day party and parade. Volunteers are needed for two shifts: from 4pm until 8pm and/or from 8pm until 11:30pm. These volunteers will assist at the Entrance, with tickets/merchandise, the ice bar, and with other miscellaneous tasks. A great opportunity for those interested in history, architecture, Buffalo, and fun events! Contact: volunteercoord@buffalocentralterminal.org.

PUSH Buffalo is a grassroots, non-profit community organization working to rebuild the West Side of Buffalo. They are seeking volunteers for to assist with property rehabilitation and community outreach efforts. Contact: Aaron at aaron@pushbuffalo.org.


Meals on Wheels distributes 800,000 meals to homebound elderly and disabled WNYers each year. Volunteers are needed to serve a warm midday meal and a cold supper each day to residents in need. Volunteers meet at the Church of the Assumption located at 435 Amherst St. and carry out their delivery routes from there. A car and license are preferred, but those without are still able to volunteer. The church is located within walking distance of Buffalo State's Campus. Tifft Nature Preserve is a 264-acre nature refuge dedicated to conservation and environmental education. The Preserve was created in 1972 from land purchased by the City of Buffalo for a landfill site. Tifft is looking for volunteers to assist with various programs, communications, and fundraisers. Examples of volunteer positions include Education Facilitator, Camp-In Assistant, Camp Wee Explorers Gallery Attendant, and Public Greeter. Buffalo ReUse is a not-for-profit organization, established in 2006 in response to the City of Buffalo's plans to develop deconstruction as a competitive alternative to the demolition of abandoned housing stock. Volunteers have been critical to envisioning, building and expanding the program in Buffalo. With the help of many volunteers, Buffalo ReUse has deconstructed its first five houses, raised over a quarter of a million dollars in seed funding and established an organizational structure for future endeavors. The best way to plug into the program is to come to 298 Northampton St. in Buffalo any Saturday after 9 am and meet us-just show up and be ready to get dirty.


Please join HandsOn Greater Buffalo and Western New York AmeriCorps in celebrating Earth Week with a week of events and service projects from April 18-25! Events will include beautification projects at Gallagher Beach and throughout the Olmstead Parks, the greening of 10 low-income homes on Buffalo's East Side, and an EnviroFair highlighting environmentally responsible programs and organizations throughout greater Buffalo.
