Graphic Novels and Sequential Art
Tuesday, January 10, 2006 - 1:00 - 3:00pm - Butler Library 210
David Lotempio, comics historian and life-long fan, will discuss the
growth of the graphic novel as a viable entertainment medium. Graphic novels and their comic book siblings are a form of sequential art with roots throughout history, beginning with ancient cave drawings and evolving up to the present-day web-comics. They are the cousins to the novel and motion pictures. The graphic novel was dismissed for decades as childish, disposable literature; but renewed interest by audiences hungry for entertainment has brought more attention to this neglected art form. The discussion will examine how comic books and graphic novels intersect with American society, as well as talk about recent, noteworthy additions to the growing canon. |
Tim Bryant - Tim is sponsoring this workshop and has been an Instructional Technology Librarian since August 2005. Related to two of our winter session topics, he recommends Alan Moore's "Watchmen" as the perfect crime scene investigation in graphic novel format. |
