Elimination of the Mandatory Employee Contribution for Members of the ORP

Members who joined the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) on or after July 27, 1976, have been required to contribute three percent of their salary to their ORP contracts. The Governor signed legislation that eliminates the required three percent employee contribution, for employees with ten or more years of SUNY ORP (TIAA-CREF, ING, MetLife, and/or VALIC) membership. The state, or sponsoring organization, will increase the employer contribution as the employee contribution is correspondingly reduced.

This legislation has been phased in over a three-year period. Employees who currently have ten or more years of SUNY ORP membership have already had two percent of the employee contribution eliminated. The third and final phase of legislation will eliminate the remaining one percent employee contribution, effective in the April 14, 2010, paycheck.

Employees who reach 10 years of SUNY ORP membership after April 14, 2010, will have the full three percent eliminated when they reach the 10 years of membership.

Additional information about the elimination of the mandatory employee contribution for members of the ORP is available at www.buffalostate.edu/offices/hr/orp.asp. If you have any questions, please contact Human Resources at ext. 4821.
