ANGEL Supported File Type

File extensions for use with ANGEL

ANGEL at Buffalo State is a hosted system – this means the servers used to run ANGEL are located OFF campus and are maintained by ANGEL Learning, Inc. staff. ANGEL uses Microsoft Windows 2003 servers.

This document includes a chart of commonly used file formats. Please read the following paragraphs first as they provide extra clarification on file formats.

File extensions like *.TXT (Notepad file), *.DOC (WORD files), *.XLS (Excel Files), etc., are “native” and are set to work by default. When you enter an ANGEL course site and choose to add content, and then choose to add a file, you are supplied a list of file types – these are NOT the only types available, they are just the most common.

Proprietary software applications (e.g. Mathematica) do not have any verified authenticity with Microsoft servers. When loaded into ANGEL, it tries to run its own files on the web server and, for security reasons, the web server will not open/play everything that is thrown its way; it wants the administrator to approve/verify the file so that security/virus issues don't arise.

Any proprietary software application that has its own foreign file extension could need to be added to the ANGEL server. However, as we are hosted, this does not happen last minute. It must be planned in advance as it requires the server to be taken down. This creates downtime for all users and must be requested at least one week in advance.

If you plan to use proprietary software applications on ANGEL, please e-mail Meghan Pereira at pereirme@buffalostate.edu with the name of the software and the file extension and file types needed. Again, provide one week’s notice.

For students to be able to play, view, or use the file on their own computers they will require the appropriate software or Web browser plug-in.
