This year's symposium theme is environmental responsibility and photography as a tool for social change.

From the shores of Lake Erie to the shores of Chautauqua Lake, almost everything in Chautauqua County is within a half hour drive.

Come Early, Stay Later
Check out the 2009 Mayville Bluegrass Festival the weekend before the symposium and consider visiting Chautauqua Institution for its opening week beginning the Sunday after. Be sure to link to the Visitor's Bureau site to discover the many other recreational opportunites in Chautauqua County, the green and lovely natural vacationland.

• Luncheon at The Cherry Creek Inn Carriage House

• Shopping at The Depot, 1896 restored station with Amish goods, antiques, railroad memorabilia & more; the Hoestler’s Quilt & Gift Shop ; Shaffer’s Sausage Kitchen & Smoke House; Miller’s Baked Goods Stand; Amish Produce Stand


Convene at THE DEPOT, a beautifully restored 1896 Victorian railroad station with waiting & baggage rooms filled with antiques, railroad memorabilia, and Amish handicrafts.

Tour the CURRIER & IVES COUNTRYSIDE of nearby Amish farms. Their lovely gardens and fields are tended by hand and horsepower reminiscent of the late 1800's. The vistas are breathtaking in the early summer splendor! Learn about the customs and culture of this very conservative, deeply religious community of Amish.

Visit Mrs. Miller's Stand for her homemade bread, pies, cookies, & "all day donuts" baked to perfection on the wood burning stove. Shop at the Hoestler's Quilt & Gift Shop enjoy the view from their beautiful hilltop farm. Choose from the early produce at another Amish roadside stand.

Step into the authentic Victorian carriage house at the Cherry Creek Inn to enjoy an Amish-style dinner of baked chicken breast, potato salad, coleslaw, Amish bread & pies, coffee/tea/lemonade. Guests will tour the George N. Frost House, a gorgeous Italianate home built in the1860's and filled with antiques and collectibles from the Sweetings extensive travel around the world. Stroll the gardens or enjoy the view from the 2nd floor Library.

Complete the tour with a stop at the Shaffer's Sausage Kitchen & Smokehouse for more culinary delectibles from apple sausage to beef sticks. Cooler may be useful for sausage that you may wish to purchase.

10:30 am Tour Amish country including stops at Quilt Shop, Produce & Baked Goods Stand

12:30 pm Luncheon at the Cherry Creek Inn & tour of Frost House (Restroom)

3:00 pm Depart for the Sausage Kitchen (Restroom)

4:00 pm Leave for home (returning guide to The Depot on the way)
