Geography Action Activities

Newspaper in Education

Working with Newspapers in Education (NIE) the NYGA prepared a number of inserts on migration titled Roots and Routes. Each insert focuses on a specific migration topic: Defining Migration; Erie Canal, Migration to Suburbia; Animal Migration, and Diffusion of Disease. The series has been published in local papers across New York and it is designed to be used with the newspaper. Below is a copy of the series. If you do not have access to a newspaper with our NIE series, we encourage you to download the series and use it with your local newspaper.

Tee Shirt Day (courtesy of John Agnello)

Wednesday, November 16th is geography tee shirt day (if you miss this day do feel free to set your own day). Please encourage (or allow) your students to wear something that relates to geography. Any shirt with words or pictures showing something will do. Have the student express the geographic significance of the words or picture. Ask them what geography theme they are wearing. You may ask them to write a report related to their shirt. Below is a link to a tee shirt rubric related to either the five themes of geography or family migration geography.
